Picturing Change was a participatory photo project that provided women who work at anganwadis (free childcare centres) in Bangalore the tools to represent their own stories. The project was initiated by Fulbright scholar and author Mathangi Subramanian. I joined the project as a photography consultant. Money for the cameras was raised through crowdsourcing and a small grant from the Fulbright Foundation. We held workshops to train five anganwadi workers – Geetha, Sujatha, Sumitra, Varalakshmi, and Yashoda – in photography and visual storytelling. The result was a series of photos that were exhibited at Thalam gallery, Bangalore, from September 28 to October 12, 2013.
